Region Matters?

The other day I was having this discussion about cancer with my friend. She went on to tell about a friend of hers who got a type of cancer and told me, "I cannot believe, this guy, he is a non-smoker, a SOUTH INDIAN, a vegetarian got cancer."

I wondered how important was the regional reference? Is that how cancer chooses it's target?

Its not who the cancer chooses, rather the age old stereotyping of people and how people perceive and compartmentalize for their own sanity. Its not fair, it mostly inaccurate, but if a certain threshold of people believe in a certain thing, that becomes the norm and there always be someone who profits from those beliefs or promote those for their own advantage.

The problems with comments like this in a serious situation takes attention away from the serious matter at hand.

hi Anu!
Nice candid blog. I am a lurker mostly :) But I am so annoyed by how some south Indians at times think they are the most cleanest living creatures on planet and anything like this smacks the daylights out of them!! I grew up in South India with South Indians as most of my friends. In my experience, atleast 6 out of 10 have this air about them ..what with 'madi' and 'theetu' etc.
Here is a funny incident -- I joined my friend to invite some of our friends for her wedding. When we visited this guy's house who was a tam bram, we saw his mom standing outside the house on a side under a thatched roof. She got so excited when we invited them and the word wedding was uttered, she was so teary and wanted to come stand closer, but the "man" of that family promptly scolded her and firmly asked her to stand away ..he said " theet di.. kooda varade .. " I was so annoyed and on our way back, told my friend that this man is taking it too far..what is he going to do about me having entered his house with period ? have I already made his house and therefore his soul "unclean"???
following 'theetu', 'madi' and eating vegetarian food does not make one any more purer or superior than the poor commoner. It's the thoughts, deeds and humanity that does.

It does not matter who it is...you cannot change some people's perception...most of us are always trying to upgrade our thinking process but some of us get left behind...we can definitely feel bad for them...

Welcome back Meenu...long time!
