Are you sure...

...you are going to eat so much??? This guy asked me. A guy whom I had met only twice before and had not exchanged more than hello's...

After a concert, a group of friends including me and this character in question went to dinner at IHOP...and I ordered myself one of those exclusive french toasts with fruits and the whole deal, including eggs, hash browns, etc, etc,..and when my order came, this dude asked me this.

I asked him, if he had any problem with my weight gain issues.

That shut him up...

Good God! Yeah some people are just clueless. A relative had visited last year and the first thing he told me was "you are FAT", not in a polite way or anything, just as I have written it above. It's good u had a retort, I was rather dumbfounded and then fumed for the rest of the evening (and now too).

how rude of him... I remember... my friends & I went for a lunch w/ this guy "Y" and between the conversation he said "all of you are married... so you all must be old"... we were like "WTF" coz he was older than all of us... we fought back and he ended up shutting his mouth... but still some guys are just stupid..

Hi Anu,

I somehow landed here from blog hopping. I am from Chennai too and find that some girls in US who are from north ( bombay etc) tend to think of us as lowly creatures .. and chennai as some ancient city with no modern fun things to do. I get so mad..I see you have some northy friends, how do you deal with it? Have you been given that feeling ever?

( I will probabaly start a blog to vent all my anger against their prejudice)

Puja, I am not always quick with retorts...this was one such occasion...

Suchi, Argh...WTH ppl sometimes are so unbelievable and not sensitive...and sensible either...

Sum :) yup...one of those times...

TP, i think he needed my food...and it was yummy...and i loved it...

Thanks PN

Remya, that guy needs a reality check...since when did age and married status have any relation?

Meena, This is going to be a long reply.

I know exactly what you are talking about sista...I have been there and done that, especially when we just got here and were in school. People then are naive and ignorant and also arrogant.

But my friends here in Dallas (most of them) are very nice and do not make a deal about where we are from. But on some occasion if someone where to irritate me, I give it back or fume behind...

BTW, I am not just from Chennai but a die hard fan of Rajnikanth too. Imagine how I fight to defend him and all other Tamil actors? And yes I like surya and nope I do not like Hrithik...so imagine the arguments that arise from that...

My husband is also not from chennai but he better not make fun of me or he wud just be ridiculing his own choice...even though we always have the discussion that starts like, "in my city we do it like this..."

I think in the end, it all matters how close you are to the person who is being mean. If my good friend tries to bug me, he gets it back and we make up fast...

But if someone I do not care makes mean comments, I give it back and do not care about them after that.

Let me know if this helped...

Thanks for visiting and keep coming back and when you start the blog...give me the url :)

Hi Anu,

Thanks da for your long sweet reply. Yes it helped but you know what my problem is? I have all this anger and when time comes to give back like you said you do, I get tongue tied. Then when I am back home I keep hitting myself for not saying the right things. More than such people I end up hating myself. I am working on lowering my anger and speak right in such situations but I get too emotional because some one is putting down my birth place ( chennai), the place I grew up in, the place where I got educated, the place that gave me so many memories, the place that made me what I am and the place that i simply love. what really boils my blood is when people who have not even set foot in Chennai comment and laugh about how people there cant speak proper english or speak hindi with an accent or how orthodox or whatever crap prejudice they have. And I have travelled a lot in India and find that there is almost the same situation in UP, Bihar, AP, Gujarat even Delhi and Bombay have their flaws.. but I don;t go critisizing about a place when someone is from that state. It is so juvenile, immatured and beneath me..how do I retort to something like" hey Chennai does not even have hip pubs/dicsos" etc. I am like, you have not even been there..!!! It is just too kiddish. So I just walked away and broke that friendship. Was not worth it !!

We are supposed to be a secular country and yet so SO divided. Even among the educated so called forward class. Shame on such people. I can only imagine how the poor class must be so fanatic about religion and caste and creed.

Sorry for the long comment, I seriously should vent all this in my own blog.

Angry, sad, frustrated, and hating myself for not being able to atleast act cool and reply back to such people instead of fuming and getting tongue tied and then saying all the right things in my head at home !!!
